Coolio performs for UT chapter of Phi Psi: Hundreds of UT students filled the backyard of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house to relive their middle-school fantasies of seeing one of the most famous rappers of the '90s. Coolio, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., performed old-school favorites such as "Gangsta's Paradise" while throngs of fans took their opportunity to dance with the rapper Friday night. Coolio, a West Coast rapper and former firefighter from Compton, Calif., is probably best known for his rap song, "Gangsta's Paradise." The hit was the No. 1 single in 1995 and earned him a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance.
Phi Psi to appear in ‘The Real World’ : The 20-year-old pre-business major was selected for the show’s cast. For four months, he shared a large house with six roommates and dozens of television cameras in Austin, Texas. The seven cast members — who also included a Tempe resident named Nehemiah — worked with the Austin Film Society to film a documentary about the city’s annual South by Southwest Music Festival. Wes says that viewers who were let down by last season’s lackluster "The Real World: Philadelphia" won’t be disappointed with the Austin season. He compares his experience to the highly watched 2002 Las Vegas season. "They did a lot of the stuff that we were doing,’’ he says. "We lived three blocks away from a strip of bars that were just really fun, and in Vegas they lived in a bar pretty much, so we kind of had the same experiences.
Phi Psi Headquarters moving to a new mansion: The majestic 89-year-old Indianapolis mansion formerly occupied by the Hudson Institute has a new owner and, officials hope, a future free of controversy. A charitable foundation of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity closed a deal with the now-departed think tank this week to buy the Herman Kahn Center, 5395 Emerson Way, for an undisclosed sum. Hudson had been asking $2.25 million for the 31,000-square-foot building, which sits among 5.9 acres of wooded hills overlooking Fall Creek. Phi Kappa Psi will move its national headquarters with 14 staff members from its Downtown Lockerbie Street location, Collinsworth said. Space was the main factor behind the move, he said. The fraternity’s current headquarters has 7,000 square feet — less than one-fourth the size of the Kahn Center. Nationwide, the fraternity has more than 4,000 undergraduate members and 60,000 living alumni, Collinsworth said. Phi Kappa Psi hopes to occupy the Kahn Center by August, he said, after making some repairs and renovations to the building.
Phi Psi wins ‘The Amazing Race’ : University of Oregon grad and Phi Kappa Psi Oregon Alpha Alumni, Uchenna Agu won the latest edition of the CBS reality show The Amazing Race, which aired Tuesday, May 10, 2005. Uchenna was accompanied by his wife, Joyce, on a path that took them from Long Beach, Calif. to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. while passing through South America, Africa, Asia and Europe. In addition to the $1 million prize, they grew as individuals and as a couple, which they cite as the most valuable part of their experience.
